Sweden’s National Day is an annual holiday observed on June 6th. Prior to 1983, the day was known as Swedish Flag Day. Sweden’s National Day began in 1916 at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium as a way to honor King Gustav Vasa who is considered by many to be the foundation of modern Sweden. June 6th is also the date the new constitution was adopted in 1809.
In 2005, National Day became an official Swedish public holiday, replacing Whit Monday. This particular public holiday represents Swedish independence as it signified the end of the Danish-ruled Kalmar Union. Nowadays, the King and Queen of Sweden participate in a yearly ceremony at Skansen, Stockholm’s open-air museum. The welcoming of new Swedish citizens typically takes place around Sweden on National Day.
